How ZA-Z's guns work: fire modes, magazines, suppressors and kneeling

Checked | 3 min read

Every gun on ZA-Z, the game's own and ZA-Z's, now follows the game's own gun rules: Single or Full Auto, switched with Shift + X, at the same rate of fire as before; one magazine per gun; reloads, the firearm radial (hold R) and the right-click menu work as in any Project Zomboid game. ZA-Z adds three things on top: suppressors that really quieten a shot, tracer magazines, and kneeling to steady your aim.

#Which fire modes are there?

Single and Full Auto, nothing else. Press Shift + X (Shift and the rack key) to switch on a gun that has both. The three-round burst is gone: every gun that had it now fires single shots in its place.

GunFire modes
M16A3, M4 Carbine, AK-47, MP5, MP5SD, the game's M16Full Auto or Single
SCAR-H, AX-9, FAD, P90, UMP-26Full Auto or Single
Glock 17, M93R, VHS-K2Single
SRR-61, M82A1, OB-15, SG-16Single

#Which magazine does my gun take?

One magazine type per gun, the game's own rule, named after the gun the way the game names its own ("M16 Magazine"). Every gun's description says which one it takes.

MagazineFits
M9 Magazine (the game's)Glock 17, M93R, M9
M16 Magazine (the game's)M16, M16A3, M4 Carbine, VHS-K2, AX-9, FAD
M1A Magazine (the game's)AK-47, SCAR-H, SRR-61
MP5 MagazineMP5, MP5SD
UMP-26 Magazine, OB-15 Magazine, M82A1 Magazine, SG-16 Drum, P90 Magazinetheir own gun

Older magazines (the 25, 40 and 100-round 9mm ones, the 20 and 75-round 5.56 ones, the old per-gun magazines) turn into the gun's own magazine the moment you carry them. Rounds move across up to the new magazine's size; the rest come out as loose rounds in the same bag, so nothing is lost.

#How do suppressors work?

A fitted suppressor makes zombies hear the shot from a quarter of the distance, at half the loudness, with its own quieter sound and no muzzle flash. Take it off and the gun is loud again.

  • Pistol Suppressor: Glock 17, M93R, M9, M1911, Desert Eagle and the Gold Desert Eagle.
  • 5.56 Suppressor: M16A3, M4 Carbine, VHS-K2, AX-9, FAD.
  • 7.62 Suppressor: SCAR-H, AK-47.
  • .45 Suppressor: UMP-26.

The MP5SD and the OB-15 have theirs built in. Fit and remove them the game's way, like a scope or a laser.

#How do I shoot tracers?

Load a magazine with tracer rounds of one colour and every shot from it draws a streak in that colour, for you and for everyone near you. The full guide is on the Tracers page.

#How do I kneel and aim with a gun?

Crouch with any firearm in your hands and stand still: your character drops to one knee, aiming or not, instead of standing up the moment you aim. Kneeling steadies the shot while you aim:

  • +10 hit chance on the gun.
  • The aim settles 1.5 times as fast, both after you raise the gun and after each shot.

Move while crouched and aiming and you walk on bent knees with the gun up; move without aiming and it is the normal crouch walk. The bonus only counts while you kneel still, once the kneel has settled.

ZA-Z's own rifles (the P90, VHS-K2, AX-9, OB-15, UMP-26, FAD, SCAR-H, SRR-61, SG-16 and M82A1) are carried muzzle up when you run or sprint, with your hand on the gun's own grip. Every other gun keeps the game's own run.

#What happened to the guns I already had?

Nothing is lost. The first time you carry a gun saved before this update, the server puts it right: a fire mode that no longer exists becomes one that does (a burst gun goes to single), and the gun takes its current numbers. Old magazines turn into the gun's own, as above. More on ZA-Z's Gear and Clothing.
