Project Zomboid tattoos on ZA-Z: ZA-Z's Ink and the Rosewood tattoo parlour

On ZA-Z you get tattoos at the tattoo parlour in Rosewood: walk in, right-click one of the barber chairs or tattoo beds and choose Get inked. ZA-Z's Ink, the server's own tattoo mod, has 81 designs (131 pieces once left and right versions are counted) in black and grey or in colour, across seven body areas, and you can wear several on each area. It is free and self-serve, you try every design on your own character before you commit, and every tattoo is permanent.

#Where is the tattoo parlour?

The parlour is in the north-west part of Rosewood, in what used to be the Haircuts n' More salon. It sits inside the Rosewood safe zone, so there are no zombies and no PvP while you get inked.

• Building: the big mixed-use block at x 8072–8096, y 11522–11569 (it also holds a clinic, a cafe, a Zippee store, offices and flats).
• Shop: ground floor, x 8081–8095, y 11545–11551.
• Street door: 8096, 11547 on the east face, under the red awning.
• Look for: the lit TATTOO 42 sign hanging out over the pavement above the door.

Inside, the walls are black and the lights over the mirrors glow red and pink. Four barber chairs stand along the north wall (x 8082, 8084, 8086 and 8088, y 11546), with two black tattoo beds by the south wall, glass display counters, red tool cabinets, two black chesterfields and a wall of flash posters. For the full mood, switch off the white ceiling light (switch at 8081, 11549).

The parlour belongs to everyone: the building cannot be claimed as a safehouse, so nobody can lock you out.

#How do I get a tattoo in Project Zomboid on ZA-Z?

1. Go to the parlour and right-click a barber chair or a tattoo bed. Choose Get inked: your character sits down and the ink screen opens.
2. Pick a body area: Left arm, Right arm, Left leg, Right leg, Back, Chest or Neck. Filter by All designs, Black and grey or Colour.
3. Click designs to try them on. The preview is your own character in underwear, so you see exactly where each piece lands. Picks stay on while you switch areas; click a design again to drop it, or press Clear picks.
4. Press Ink it (or Ink it (3) with three picks). A warning lists every design you picked and asks once more, because none of them can ever be removed.
5. Each tattoo takes about 10 seconds with the buzz of the machine and a progress bar. Walking away stops it.

#Are tattoos permanent?

Yes. There is no removal and no swapping, in game or on the website, so think before you ink. Tattoos:

• stay through relogs and restarts;
• sit under clothes, bandages and makeup, so a shirt covers a chest piece;
• never wash off;
• are cosmetic only, with no stats.

A new character starts with clean skin. If you die, the ink goes with you.

#How many tattoo designs are there?

Every arm and leg design comes for either side, which is why the two arms hold the same 27. Of the 131 pieces, 80 are black and grey and 51 are in colour.

Arm pieces and sleeves: ZA-Z shield, ZA-Z roundel, Tribal sleeve, Tribal shoulder, Polynesian sleeve (with a chest medallion), Dragon sleeve, Clockwork skull sleeve, Wolf and pines, Strength in Protection, Skull and bones, Rotting grin, Player One (a pixel-art game sleeve), Glory Days (a memorial sleeve), Elbow web, Koi and waves, Oni and wind, Raven and knotwork, Trash polka crow, Hot rod flames, Graveyard, Moon phases.

Leg pieces: Barbed wire, Tribal band, Unholy, Skeleton gunslinger, Goat and roses, Sacred geometry, Guardian lion, Crawling panther, Knee rosette, Bone leg, Biomech thigh, Octopus and anchor, Fox and foxgloves.

Back pieces: Floral dragon, War angel, Dreamcatcher, Ram skull, Ship in a storm, Tiger and snake, Reaper, Phoenix, and two full back pieces, War story and Archangel, that carry the scene over both shoulders.

Chest and neck: Protea, Spread eagle, Sacred heart, Sun and moon, Knox County lettering; Death's-head moth, Skeleton hand, Barbed wire choker, Lace choker, Neck rose, Neck snake, Nape moon, Nape web.

The dainty set, each in a (black) and a (colour) version: Rose and thorns, Hummingbird, Thorned heart, Peony, Wildflower bouquet, Butterflies, Ankle vine, Rose garter, Spine bloom, Birds in flight, Swallows and Sternum lotus.

On a female character, back and chest pieces that cross the bra line are cut around it automatically.

#Can I stack tattoos on one body part?

Yes. Every area takes as many pieces as you like, so a sleeve, a shoulder piece and an elbow web can share one arm. Pieces that cover the same skin simply overlap, and the full back pieces also paint over the upper arms. Try combinations on the ink screen first; that is what the preview is for.

#Tattoos from the website: the Tattoos tab on /me

The parlour is the fun way in, and the website is the second one:

1. Sign in on your ZA-Z page with your server account or Steam.
2. Open the Tattoos tab. Your character has to be online on the server.
3. Pick a design and press Ink it, then confirm the permanence warning. It lands on your skin in about 10 seconds.

The previews on the site show each design unrolled flat; in game it wraps round the arm, leg, neck or back. The same rules apply: free, your own characters only, and permanent.
