Driving on ZA-Z: real speed, map loading, trailers and the Huey

Checked | 5 min read

On ZA-Z your car drives at its true speed. The server's speed limit is set to 150, the game's maximum, so the speedometer shows real km/h and every vehicle tops out at the game's hard wall of 122.4 km/h. That is fast enough to outrun the map on ground nobody has visited, which is behind most "the road went black" and "my car jumped into a house" stories.

#How fast do cars really go on ZA-Z?

On a default multiplayer server the limit is 70 and the dial is scaled up: a car showing 120 is really doing 70. At 150 that scaling is off, so the dial tells the truth and you cover about 1.7 times the ground for the same reading.

The wall is 122.4 km/h (34 metres, or 34 tiles, a second) for every vehicle, race car or step van. Your own game enforces it and no server setting moves it, which is why the best readings on the KY-60 board bunch up between 120 and 122.

#Why does the road ahead go black when I drive fast?

Your game downloads the map in chunks of 8 by 8 tiles, one after another. Ground you have seen before is cached on your PC. Ground nobody has ever visited has to be built by the server first, loot and parked cars included, and your game waits up to 30 seconds per chunk while it does.

The driver's PC runs the car and loads the ground ahead, so a slow PC at the wheel stalls the car for everyone in it. In a test drive on 20 September 2026 a lone driver hit the wall on known roads and averaged 77 km/h across never-visited ground without a single stall: the server keeps up, the driver's machine is the usual bottleneck.

#What to do about it

  • Ease off on first-visit ground. If the road ahead turns black, stop and let it load; never drive into it.
  • Let whoever has the fastest PC drive.
  • Keep the game and your Zomboid user folder on an SSD: the chunk cache is read from your own disk.

#My car ended up inside a building. Did I do that?

Probably not. When the square under a car has not loaded on the driver's game, the engine snaps the car to the corner of its 8 by 8 chunk without checking for walls, so a corner inside a building puts the car inside. Cars cannot drive through walls (only windows and flimsy objects break). On 29 September 2026 a car finished a fast run from Riverside in the lobby of the Brandenburg retirement home, parked exactly on a chunk corner. If it happens to you, ask an admin to move it out.

#Trailers: why won't it hitch?

The hitch option only lists trailers within 6 tiles, then the game checks:

  • Neither vehicle is already towing something.
  • The pair can tow each other (not every trailer fits every vehicle).
  • They point the same way or opposite, within about 53 degrees of a straight line.
  • Both sit upright, tilted no more than about 37 degrees from each other: no ditches or steep banks.
  • The hitch points are within 1 tile of each other.

The last one catches almost everyone: a "won't hitch" report on ZA-Z passed every other check with the tow bar 6 tiles away. Reverse slowly and straight, on level ground, until the bumper nearly touches the trailer.

#Which vehicles are on the server?

Besides the vanilla cars, ZA-Z runs the Humvee with its cargo trailer, the '88 Hilux, the Skyline GT-R, the Pierce Arrow fire trucks, the M35 army trucks, seven more trailers and the motorbikes and quad of Autotsar Motor Club. Full list on Mods. Storage worth knowing for a hauler:

#Flying the UH-1B Huey

The UH-1B Huey is live, a beta mod that runs on Aviation Core.

  • Where: one spawns on each pad at the Brandenburg airstrip, Louisville Airport and the military research facility west of Rosewood, the first time anyone loads that ground. A pad someone already visited may be empty.
  • Before you fly: read the UH-1B Operator's Manual; the mod leaves a copy in each Huey. Fuel is aviation fuel, in barrels at the pads and cans on board.
  • Speed: with ZA-Z's Essentials the pilot flies forward at about 119 km/h instead of the mod's 65 (switch under Options > Mods).
  • Map not loaded: 119 km/h outruns the map. With no loaded ground ahead an alarm sounds and the screen shows STOP THE VEHICLE! MAP NOT LOADED! Stop and hover until the ground appears.
  • Seats: the seat panel puts all eight seats on their own spots with names (Pilot, Co-pilot, four door seats, two bench seats) and an exit icon per seat down each side ("Roomier seat panel" under Options > Mods).
  • Cargo: 500, more than twice the mod's 230; the server sets it on every Huey as it loads.
  • Rotor wash: a running engine shoves anyone standing close.

#Riding along: why does the car look parked?

Sometimes a passenger sees the car standing still while the driver is clearly moving. It is a vanilla multiplayer bug: your game syncs its clock with the server only when you join, and a bad sync lasts the session. Relogging runs the sync again.

Highway records: KY-60 highway. When the Huey arrived: Server timeline.
