The Cold Pack on ZA-Z: cool a burn so it heals faster and hurts less

Checked | 3 min read

In vanilla Project Zomboid the Cold Pack does nothing. On ZA-Z it treats burns: open the health panel, right-click a burned body part and pick Apply Cold Pack. The burn loses 20 points of healing time (a fresh burn starts at 50 to 100), and up to 40 points of the extra pain from cleaning it goes away. The pack is never used up, so one pack in your bag covers every burn you will ever get. It comes with ZA-Z's Essentials, so there is nothing to install.

#What does a cold pack do to a burn?

EffectHow much
Burn healing time20 points shorter (a fresh burn is 50 to 100 points, so a small burn can heal on the spot)
Extra pain on that body partUp to 40 points less (cleaning a burn adds up to 60)
The pack itselfKept: use it again on the next burn
First AidA little First Aid XP for whoever applies it

A burn you have already cleaned stays clean after the pack. It only needs cleaning again after it has healed another stretch on its own, exactly as without the pack.

#How do I put a cold pack on my own burn?

  1. Carry a Cold Pack. It can be anywhere in your inventory, including a bag you carry.
  2. Open the Health tab of your character window.
  3. Right-click the burned body part in the list and pick Apply Cold Pack.

You can also drag the Cold Pack from your inventory onto the burned body part. Your character holds the pack to the burn for a few seconds; moving off cancels it.

#How do I treat another survivor's burn?

  1. Stand next to them, right-click them and pick Medical Check. Their health panel opens.
  2. Right-click their burned body part and pick Apply Cold Pack (or drag your Cold Pack onto it).
  3. Both of you stay put until the bar fills: if either of you moves, it stops.

The pack comes from your inventory and stays with you.

#How do I know it worked?

The burned body part gets a second line in the health panel, in blue, under the red Burned:

  • Burned
  • Cooled with a cold pack

Everyone who opens that survivor's health panel sees it. While a burn has the line, Apply Cold Pack on that body part is greyed out; hover it and it says the burn has already been cooled.

#Can I use it twice on the same burn?

No. Each burn takes one cold pack, on each body part. Once that burn has healed, the next burn on the same body part takes a pack again, however big or small it is. Burns on different body parts are separate: a burned hand and a burned foot take one pack each.

#Where do I find cold packs?

The Cold Pack is a normal First Aid find (0.3 kg). A Box of Cold Packs opens into six loose packs. Since one pack lasts forever, a single find is enough; a spare in a friend's bag means they can treat you too.
