Scrapping car parts on ZA-Z: hoods, trunks, seats and mufflers into metal and cloth
Spare car parts are not junk any more. A hood or trunk lid cuts up into sheet metal, scrap and screws; the trunk left behind after you salvage a car gives a sheet of metal; a muffler gives a metal pipe; and a car seat strips down to cloth, a sponge and screws. Everything you get is ordinary game material, ready for welding, repairs, bandages and builds.
This works on the parts of the modded cars, trucks, motorbikes and trailers on ZA-Z too, not only the game's own cars.
#What can I scrap, and what do I get?
Open the crafting menu with the part in your inventory or on the floor next to you. Broken parts work just as well as good ones.
| Part | Tools | Skill | You get |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hood | propane torch (2 uses), welding mask | Welding 3 | 1 small sheet metal, 1 scrap metal, 2 screws |
| Trunk lid or tailgate | propane torch (2 uses), welding mask | Welding 3 | 1 small sheet metal, 1 scrap metal, 2 screws |
| Large trunk (40 kg and up) | propane torch (4 uses), welding mask | Welding 3 | 1 sheet metal, 2 scrap metal, 4 screws |
| Trunk (smaller cars and trailers) | propane torch (4 uses), welding mask | Welding 3 | 2 small sheet metal, 2 scrap metal, 4 screws |
| Seat | screwdriver, and a knife or scissors | none | 2 ripped sheets, 1 sponge, 2 screws |
| Muffler | hacksaw | none | 1 metal pipe |
The torch jobs and the muffler give Welding XP; stripping a seat gives a little Tailoring XP. Your tools are kept (the saw, screwdriver and knife wear a little), the part is used up.
#Do I have to pick the part up?
No. A car trunk weighs 30 to 50 kg, so every one of these jobs works on a part lying on the floor next to you. Stand by it, open the crafting menu, and cut it up where it lies.
#Where do trunks come from?
A car's trunk never comes off with a wrench. It drops on the ground when you take the whole car apart with vehicle salvage, along with every other part still fitted. Cutting up the trunk afterwards is the last bit of metal a car gives you.
Hoods, trunk lids, seats and mufflers come off any car with the usual tools and Mechanics skill (more in Vehicles and driving).
#Is scrapping parts better than salvaging the car?
No. Strip a whole ordinary car and scrap its hood, trunk lid, four seats and muffler, and you get far less metal than cutting up the car itself, even at Welding 3. Salvage the car, then scrap what drops: that is the most a car will ever give you.
#What about tyres, brakes, doors and windows?
- Tyres: the game's own Cut Up Tire turns a tyre into tire pieces and scrap metal.
- Brakes: melt them down in a furnace, or use one as the head of a scrap weapon.
- Batteries, light bulbs and engine parts are useful as they are.
- Doors from the game's own cars cut into a whole sheet of metal with the cutting recipe that comes with vehicle armour, broken ones too. The same recipe turns a vanilla hood into 2 sheets and a trunk lid into 1, so for those you can pick whichever you need: see Vehicle Armour.
- Windows, fuel tanks and other parts cannot be scrapped.
Looking for more metal? Armour plates and bullbars are made from it: see Vehicle Armour.
